SUMMARY:Johnsontown Road Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:Saturday – August 17. Johnsontown Road Loop Hike \nDistance: 6.4 miles (qualifying) \nA sizzling hot hike for the dog days of August. For the first 3 miles\, this is a relatively flat hike along woods roads\, then it takes some rocky ups and downs. From the Johnsontown Road parking circle\, we take the White Bar to Dutch Doctor shelter. After exploring nearby campsites\, we head to Claudius Smith’s Den for a lunch break\, then south on the Blue Disc\, where we’ll navigate a couple of fun rock passages at the Elbow Brush — hopefully no one gets stuck maneuvering through. At the high point of Dater Mountain\, there is a breathtaking view of the Harriman State Park landscape\, and then a steep descent down Almost Perpendicular. We’ll exit to Johnsontown Road via the Blue Disc. \nBring 2+ liters of water\, lunch/snack. Sturdy footwear\, hat\, and sunscreen. Rain cancels. Trail map 118: Southern Harriman Bear Mountain Trails. \nMeet at the parking area at the end of Johnsontown Road\, in Sloatsburg\, at 9 AM. Qualifying. Please register by Thursday\, August 15.
