Following the shore path around Lake Sebago\, we will pick up the Triangle Trail and take it over to Lake Skenonto. Following the Victory Trail around Lake Skenonto\, we will make our way over to the Tom Jones shelter for our lunch stop. On our return trip\, we will use some of the old Hemlock Hill Road that was used by the American Continental troops to go from the Ramapo Valley to Johnsontown and points east (it was replaced in 1824 by the Monroe-Haverstraw Turnpike\, later renamed Route 106 [Harriman Trails\, page 143]). We will follow a woods road back from Lake Skenonto\, take a look at the Dutch Doctor Shelter [built in 1935]\, learn who the Dutch Doctor was\, and return to camp. \nQualifying. Parker Cabin Mountain via Claudius Smith Den \nSunday\, September 22\, 2024\nDistance: About 6 miles Elevation gain: 1015 feet Pace: Faster than usual\nStarting at the main cabin at 9 a.m.\, we will take the unmarked trail at Nawakwa towards the triangle trail. At the intersection with the triangle trail we will make a left towards DutchDoctor. At Dutch Doctor we’ll make another right turn onto the Tuxedo Mount Ivy Trail. After 1.2 miles we’ll reach Claudius Smith Den which offers great views and is a good stop to take a short break. From Claudius Smith Den we’ll continue northbound on the White Cross Trail. After 2.15 miles we’ll reach the junction with the Ramapo Dunderberg Trail. We will make a right turn and continue for 0.25 miles to reach the summit of Parker Cabin Mountain. This is a good spot to have lunch and enjoy views of Lake Sebago. \nFollowing our lunch break we will descend Parker Cabin Mountain using the Triangle Trail\, pass Lake Skenonto and after 1.95 miles make a left turn at the intersection with the unmarked trail that takes us back to camp. This hike features several ascents and descents; the pace will be a little faster than usual.\nQualifying. SUMMARY:Hike Saturday\, March 29 Ramapo Torne Loop
DESCRIPTION:The hike begins at Reeves Meadow Visitor Center (where bathrooms may possibly be open). We’ll take the Pine Meadow trail (red) west to the start of the Seven Hills trail (blue)\, which climbs southward on smooth ground through open woods\, crosses a stream\, and then climbs again to an intersection. We will take the Hillburn-Torne-Sebago (orange) over rugged ground to Ramapo Torne\, taking a breather at each layer and eating lunch on top. From Ramapo Torne\, we’ll bear east to rejoin the Seven Hills\, enjoy the scenery from Torne View\, and reach the intersection with Reeves Brook trail (white). We’ll take a sharp left onto Reeves Brook and follow it back to the Pine Meadow trail and out to Reeves Meadow Visitor Center. \nBus riders\, please take the 9:10 a.m. Coach/Shortline bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal to Sloatsburg\, then walk to the parking area behind the firehouse to meet drivers. \nDrivers\, please meet by 10:10 a.m. in Sloatsburg in the parking area behind the firehouse to meet bus riders. \nEveryone\, please register with Bill Hladky\, wehladky@yahoo.com\, 914.874.4640\, by 3/27. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 3: Diamond Mountain Circular \nStarting at 9 a.m. from the Nawakwa main cabin\, we will make our way along camp road toward 7 lakes drive which we will cross to access the Tuxedo Mt Ivy Trail. \nWe will only stay for a short distance on the TMI before we turn right onto the Stony Brook Trail and then left onto the orange Hillburn-Torne-Sebago Trail. \nAs soon as the ascent starts\, we will get a good workout. After 0.6 miles the trail merges with the Seven Hills Trail\, and we will be rewarded with a gorgeous view of our very own base — Lake Sebago. \nAfter another 0.2 miles we’ve reached the summit of Diamond Mountain (1240 ft). \nAt this point we will follow the blue Seven Hills Trail for about 0.7 miles with several great vistas along the way before descending and making a right onto the Kakiat Trail.  This is a rather steep descent that requires rock scrambling skills. \nAfter 0.6 miles on the Kakiat\, we will make a right onto the Stony Brook. After a relatively flat 1.4 miles we’ll be back at 7 lakes drive and return to camp. \nThis hike includes a steeper ascent and some rock scrambling\, and the pace will be a little faster than on some of the other hikes \nDistance: Approx. 5.6 miles (qualifying) \nApprox. total ascent 779 ft. \nParticipants need to wear sturdy footwear and bring snacks\, rain gear and enough water.  Hiking poles and bug spray are recommended.

DESCRIPTION:The Big Ice Cave\, Ellenville NY \n  \nThis adventurous hike will take place in Sam’s Point Preserve\, a branch location of Minnewaska State Park. I am on the preserve’s calendar as a “private hike\,” which means that within a couple of rules\, we can go where we please in this rough\, steep-sloped\, multiply-crevassed bedrock landscape. \n\nWe’ll start on a carriage road\, then move on to herd paths with clawing bushes and endless\, cubist rocks\, with at least one gigantic fissure. For a short while\, we’ll be in a dark room with a little ice. \n\nI am guiding as a docent\, keeping us where we want to be on my mental map; advising the sensitive ecologies and our designated paths through them. Expect abundant mountain laurel blooms\, white and pink. \n\nHikers should be ready to walk by 9:00 a.m. and will return to cars at 5 p.m. Possible group dinner in one of the several hiker affordable restaurants in the area. \n\nDistance: 4.5 miles; NYNJTC trail map 104 \n\nTrip limited to 11 hikers; meeting place specifics provided to registrants. \n\nPlease register with leader Bill Hladky: 914.874.4640\,  wehladky@yahoo.com

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 12\, 2025\, 10:15 a.m. \nHikers will gather at the parking area off Long Mountain Parkway by 10:15 a.m.From the parking area\, we will follow the Long Path to the Torrey Memorial\, at the summit of Long Mountain. From there\, we’ll backtrack to the Popolopen Gorge trail\, follow a woods road to the Anthony Wayne trail\, and then hike over to Turkey Hill Lake. The return trip from the lake on the Popolopen Gorge Trail goes up a fairly steep hill\, then reconnects with the Long Path\, which we follow back to the parking area. \nHikers should wear good hiking shoes\, bring water\, lunch/snack\, and rain gear. SUMMARY:Hike Peekskill Blue Mountain Reservation Circular
DESCRIPTION:From Peekskill train station we’ll walk (or shuttle) to Blue Mountain Reservation and follow local trails to the summit of Spitzenberg Mountain for stunning views of the Hudson River. Returning to the main trail\, we’ll complete a rough circle around the reservation and make our way back to the train station. Expect moderately rugged trails (these are not carriage roads!) and a moderate pace. Hiking boots are recommended\, and you should bring 2 liters of water and your lunch. Qualifying. DESCRIPTION:High Points of Southern Harriman\nSunday Oct 26th. Destination: The Russian Bear. 5 miles qualifying\, less than 1\,000 feet elevation gain\, much walking on rocky\, rough trail. This point-to-point hike will have a quick\, setup shuttle in the AM. We will put a car(s) at Reeves Meadow Visitor Center and return to our start. Hike route includes the water power of the Cascade of Slid\, the high cliffs of the Russian Bear\, and a sweeping view from Torne View. The various trails pass through different trees of the diverse ecologies of the area. The  hike ends at the shuttled car for a return to Camp Nawakwa. Bring your Southern Harriman map\, and we will  trace this wandering. \n\nLet me know you are coming. Leader: Bill Hladky. 914.874.4640. wehladky@yahoo.com.

SUMMARY:Hike Tom Jones Mountain with return via Parker Cabin Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Starting at Camp\, we will take the unmarked trail north alongside Sebago until we meet with the yellow triangle trail. We’ll turn right and follow the trail for 1.15 miles to the intersection with the blue Victory trail. \n\n\nWe’ll make another right turn and follow the trail for about 1.8 miles\, past Lake Skenonto and to the intersection with the red Ramapo Dunderberg trail. \nAfter turning right onto the R.D. Trail we will find us on a short but steep ascend to the top of Tom Jones mountain. This is a great spot to take a break and have a snack. \n  \nWe will descent the same way we came up but instead of turning onto the Victory trail\, we’ll stay on the R.D. After .55 miles we reach the summit of Parker Cabin Mountain with nice views to enjoy. \n  \nWe’ll descent Parker Cabin Mountain on the yellow Triangle trail on which we will stay for a little over 2 mile until we turn left into the unmarked camp trail that’s will take through the “back entrance” to Camp Nawakwa. \n  \nThis hike features several ascents and descents\, and the pace will be a little faster than usual. \n  \nApprox. total ascend 728 feet \nDistance: Approx. 5.5 miles \n  \nParticipants should wear sturdy footwear and bring lunch\, snacks\, raingear\, and enough water  Hydration Basics: How to Stay Hydrated | REI Expert Advice \nHiking poles are recommended but not required. \n  \nMeet at 10 am at Camp Nawakwa\, Main Cabin. \n\n\nRSVP by Nov. 6 to oliverjlunt@gmail.com

The hike starts when the NJTransit train arrives in Tuxedo at approximately 10:24 AM. We’ll cover about 5 miles over hilly terrain as we take the Ramapo-Dunderberg\, Tuxedo-Mount Ivy\, White Cross\, Victory\, and Yellow Triangle trails to camp. You will need to carry all of your gear for the weekend\, as well as water and snacks for the hike. No car shuttle for gear. DESCRIPTION:Hike to the Torrey Memorial on Long Mountain  \nDistance: About 2 miles (Not-Qualifying); Elevation gain: About 300+ feet \nWe will meet at camp about 10AM and car-pool over to the hike’s starting point (the parking area off Long Mountain Parkway)\, leavingcamp about 10:30AM. Shortly after leaving the parking area\, we will follow a woods road to where it intersects with the Long Path and then climb to the Memorial at the top of Long Mountain. After viewing the memorial and taking pictures\, we will continue down the mountain back to the parking area\, making for a loop of about 2 miles. \nMeeting time is 10AM at Camp Nawakwa. Participants should wear good hiking shoes\, bring water\, a snack\, and rain gear.
