DESCRIPTION:Around Cape Horn – Saturday – June 15\, 2024 \nDistance: 5 miles. Elevation Gain: Approximately 400 feet \n\nJoin in an easy hike to the Pine Swamp Mountain area (site of the Pine Swamp Mine) and Times Square. Starting at the parking area at Lake Kanawauke (former Route 106)\, we take a short road walk and then enter the forest\, following a woods road as it climbs to meet the Dunning Trail. We hike over to Pine Swamp (and can explore the area to find the mine entrance)\, take the A-SB to Times Square (so called because it is where the Arden-Surebridge (A-SB) trail\, the Long Path (LP)\, and the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail(R-D) all come together)\, then ‘round Cape Horn on the Long Path and back to the parking area.  We will look for a hidden cave behind Cape Horn. Bring lunch\, rain gear\, water\, and appropriate hiking shoes.  \nMeet at the Parking area at 10AM. Qualifying. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 9\, join Andy Frank and the conservation committee for a tree ID hike\, beginning and ending at Kakiat County Park (on the other side of Harriman). We are hoping the mountain laurel will be in bloom! Feel free to bring your own tree identification materials if you’d like. \n  \nThis 2.5-mile hike will involve some sustained climbing to get from the river up to the Harriman plateau\, for a total ascent of about 700 feet and the same descent. This will be a short but moderately difficult hike. Start time will be 9:45 AM\, ending around 2:30 or 3:00.  \n  \nHiking boots and two quarts of water required. DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, April 13th – Parker Cabin Mt. from Rt. 17 Registration required.  \nTrails include Orange  White\, RD\, Yellow triangle out and back from Parker Cabin Mt. Some trails are on old woods road\, others on a smoothish surface\, and much of the  typical Harriman rocky surfaces from erosion. One stream crossing will build focus. Two climbs will meet your cardio pulmonary goals. From Parker Cabin Mt. we can survey the Camp’s backyard. \nPace: slow up hill and moderate downhill. 1100 ‘ elevation  gain  in up and downs. A bit more than 5 miles\, and qualifying. Dress for the  weather forecasted the morning of the hike. Actual raining cancel.  I go dreary to bright sunshine. Snow\, I will still go. Bring a lunch\,  a qt or 2 of liquid\,  good hiking boots\, lunch\, snacks\, and a map to follow where we go.  April sunshine can be strong since there are no leaves so a hat or sunblock might be useful. If we have snow on the ground\, micro spikes are strongly recommended.  Walking without them on packed snow and ice is a very high level skill. \nTransportation: Short Line Bus\,  Port authority to Tuxedo\, daily bus 9:10  to 10:12. Drivers meet riders at the commuters parking lot Tuxedo. It is the duty of any bus rider to call if the bus is going to be late. We will shuttle to commuter parking at 17a. SUMMARY:Annual Palm Sunday Hike St. John's Church in the Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:The annual Palm Sunday hike to St. John’s Church in the Wilderness has been a tradition since the 1930’s. Other groups from other hiking clubs are out this day headed to St. John’s\, and it is very common to cross paths with them as we hike along. Barring any snowstorm\, the good people of St. John’s Church in the Wilderness plan to host the traditional Palm Sunday hikers’ event on March 24th this year. [Due to the unavailability of clergy\, there will not be a 3PM service for hikers. There is the regular church service at 12:30pm\, however\, and any who are at the church early are welcome to join with the parishioners at the 12:30 service.] As part of their hospitality mission\, the parishioners will provide a light lunch for hikers. The luncheon is scheduled to start at 2PM. There is no charge for the food and drink\, but donations are always welcomed. All who are driving should meet at the church by 9AM where the cars will be parked. All cars\, except for the one or two that will shuttle hikers/drivers back to our starting point\, will be left at the church where the hike finishes. [Note: We are told that the road by the church has been torn up by the park\, but not yet repaved. Drivers are urged to drive carefully as there are many ruts and uneven surfaces on the roadway by the church.] \n  \nThe hike will start from the Camp gate and Seven Lakes Drive about 10 AM. The address of the church is 119 Johnstown Road\, Stony Point\, NY between Lake Welch Parkway and Route 106. Palm Sunday is in March this year and March weather can be unpredictable. Rain\, some cold\, blustery weather\, including snow and ice\, are always a possibility. Participants should dress warmly (layers\, no cotton)\, bring lunch\, snacks\, water\, raingear\, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Traction devices are recommended in case there is ice on the trail. DESCRIPTION:Length 5.1 mi Elevation gain 679 ft Route type Loop \n\nThis is a moderately challenging route on a popular area by Lake Skannatati.  The first 1.7 miles is a woods road with moderate incline\, some ups and downs\, passing by the entrance of an abandoned mine.  We will break at Time Square before embarking on a little scramble on the Ramapo- Dunderberg trail\, passing Ship Rock and many blueberry bushes on an open road.  There are several viewpoints in this section of the hike.  At the high points\, one can see Black Rock Mountain\, SurebridgeMountain\, and other lush green mountains in the distance before joining the Dunning/Long Path.  We then walk through a relatively flat quiet forest of song birds\, swamp land\, views of water lily patches\, along the shore of Skannatari Lake. \nMeet 9:30 am at Lake Skannatati Parking lot.  Rain cancels.   \nContact Stephanie Lai\, sclai2007@yahoo.com by end of day Thursday 8/24. DESCRIPTION:5 – 6 miles\, with a moderately strenuous\, climb up and over Stockbridge Mountain. Elevation gain about 500 feet. \n  \nIn the Fall of 1924\, the New York Chapter subleased Camp Blue Bird (on the east side of Upper Twin Lake) from a group that used the property as a girl’s camp in summer. In May\, the Chapter vacated Camp Blue Bird\, but was back in October and remained until April of 1925. It was at Camp Blue Bird that the members developed the model of the Saturday night communal meal. As stated by Ira Ayres in his write-up for the 50th anniversary of the Chapter: “Our very successful system of community meals began on our second weekend in October 1924. Hike will start at the Silvermine parking area (just past the booth). Meeting time is 9:30AM. Hike is qualifying (5-6 miles). SUMMARY:Sunday\, July 29\, 2023 - Raymond Torrey Memorial Hike (5-6 miles - Qualifying)
DESCRIPTION:Raymond H. Torrey was the first Chair of the New York Chapter and a leading figure in setting up the trail system we enjoy in Harriman. He was a co-author of the New York Walk Book\, first published in 1923. He was a newspaper journalist (the New York Post) and through his column\, called The Long Brown Path\, did much to promote and educate others about the wonders of the trails as they were being developed in Harriman State Park and beyond. This hike will visit and pay tribute to Raymond Torrey at the memorial placed on Long Mountain after his sudden death in 1938. This hike takes place on Sunday morning and details will be in the next Trail Marker and on our website. Leader will be Ray Kozma.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday June 17\, Reeves Brook/Raccoon Brook Hills/Pine Meadow Loop \nLength: 5.4 mile(Qualifying hike)\,  Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous \nThe beginning of the Reeves Brook Trail runs uphill into the woods.  It then parallels the Reeves Brook trail along the brook with attractive cascades of the brook when the water level is high.  There are several steep but short climbs up & down the trail before connecting to the Raccoon Brook Hills Trail.  We will cross a stream and pass The Pulpit\, and have two southwest-facing views of the Torne Valley.  The trail continues to climb around 800 feet to the highest point of the hike\, about 1\,230 feet above sea level.  On a clear day\, you can see the NYC skyline in the distance.  We will descend through dense stands of mountain laurel connecting to the Kakiat Trail and circuit back to the Visitor Center on the Pine Meadow Trails. \nHiking footwear required.  Bring food/snack\, water.  Rain cancel. SUMMARY:Sunday\, June 11-Parker Cabin Mountain via Claudius Smith Rock
DESCRIPTION:We will take the unmarked camp trail at Nawakwa towards the triangle trail. At the intersection with the triangle trail we will make a left turn towards Dutch Doctor. At Dutch Doctor we’ll make a right turn onto the Tuxedo Mount Ivy Trail. After 1.2 miles we’ll reach Claudius Smith Rock which offers great views and is a good stop to take a short break. From Claudius Smith we’ll continue northbound on the White Cross Trail. After 2.15 miles we’ll reach the junction with the Ramapo Dunderberg Trail. We will make a right turn and continue for 0.25 miles to reach the summit of Parker Cabin Mountain. This is a good spot to have lunch and enjoy views of Lake Sebago. Elevation gain about 700 feet. \nOn this weekend\, in the town of Damascus\, Virginia\, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy celebrates “Trail Days” – the largest A.T. specific celebration in the world. Join us as we hike part of the original and first section completed of the AT\, scouted and blazed by Raymond Torrey and other members of the then New York Chapter. This is a one-way hike\, starting from the Elk Pen (with cars being left at Lake Tiorati). DESCRIPTION:5 – 6 miles\, with a steady\, moderately strenuous\, climb up and over Stockbridge Mountain. Elevation gain about 500 feet\nIn the Fall of 1924\, the New York Chapter subleased Camp Blue Bird (on the east side of Upper Twin Lake) from a group that used the property as a girl’s camp in Summer. In May\, the Chapter vacated Camp Blue Bird\, but was back in October and remained until April of 1925. It was at Camp Blue Bird that the members developed the model of the Saturday night communal meal. As stated by Ira Ayres in his write-up for the 50th anniversary of the Chapter: “Our very successful system of community meals began on our second weekend in October 1924. Hike will start at the Silvermine parking area. Meeting time is 9:30AM. Hike is qualifying (5-6 miles). From there we’ll backtrack to the same intersection but bear right on the HTS\, which we’ll follow to the Raccoon Brook Hills trail. We’ll follow RBH to the Kakiat\, bear left\, and pick up the Pine Meadow trail for a flat walk back to Reeves Meadow. DESCRIPTION:Annual Palm Sunday Hike  \nSt. John’s Church in the Wilderness \nSunday – April 2\, 2023 \n\nBarring any late snowstorm\, the good people of St. John’s Church in the Wilderness plan to host the traditional Palm Sunday hikers’ event on April 2nd this year.  A light lunch will be provided by the parishioners. (Note: The Barn itself is not usable due to needed repairs. If the weather is fair\, tables will be set up in the field near the Barn. If the weather is poor\, the lunch will take place inside using the Church’s meeting rooms.) The luncheon is scheduled for 2PM. There is no charge for the food and drink\, but donations are always welcomed. The annual Palm Sunday hike to St. John’s Church in the Wilderness has been a tradition since the 1930’s. Other groups from other hiking clubs are out this day headed to St. John’s\, and it is very common to cross paths with them as we hike along.  \n\nThere will be two groups for the hike\, one led by Ray Kozma taking a ‘traditional’ route that will take us along Breakneck Pond and go through the AMC camp\, and one led by Lewis Ports who will take the trails on the ridge above Breakneck Pond. Both groups will start together from the gate at 7 Lakes Drive.  At a rest stop at Diamond Creek\, the groups will separate\, meeting up later at the church.  \n\nSince this is a one-way hike\, please note: \n\nAll who are driving should meet at the Church by 9AM where the cars will be parked. All cars\, except for the one or two that will shuttle hikers/drivers back to our starting point\, will be left at the Church where the hike finishes. The hike will start from the Camp gate and Seven Lakes Drive about 10 AM. The address of the church is 119 Johnstown Road\, Stony Point\, NY between Lake Welch Parkway and Route 106.   \nPalm Sunday is in early April this year and early Spring weather can be unpredictable. Rain\, some cold\, blustery weather\, including snow and ice\, are always a possibility. Participants should dress warmly (layers\, no cotton)\, bring lunch\, snacks\, water\, raingear\, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. DESCRIPTION:Around Cape Horn – Saturday – November 5\, 2022 \n\nElevation gains about 500 feet\, gentle to moderate uphills\, 5-6 miles. \n\nJoin in an easy hike to the Pine Swamp Mountain area (site of the Pine Swamp Mine) and Times Square.  \n\nStarting at the parking area at Lake Kanawauke (former Route 106)\, we take a short road walk and then enter the forest\, following a woods road as it climbs to meet the Dunning Trail.  \n\nWe will hike over to Pine Swamp (and can explore the area to find the mine entrance)\, take the A-SB to Times Square (so called because it is where the Arden-Surebridge (A-SB) trail\, the Long Path (LP)\, and the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail(R-D) all come together)\, then ‘round Cape Horn on the Long Path and back to the parking area.  We will look for a hidden cave behind Cape Horn.  \n\nIt will probably be possible to arrange a ride from Sloatsburg for those without a car. DESCRIPTION:In Celebration of Raymond H. Torrey – July 30-31\, 2022 \n  \nAt the ADK’s general meeting in October 1922\, Raymond Torrey was charged with setting up a New York Chapter. By 1923\, the New York Chapter was formally established\, with Raymond Torrey as the first Chapter Chair. He was also the co-founder of the Trail Conference and was appointed its first Secretary\, a position he held until his untimely death (on his birthday\, July 28th) in 1938 at age 58. New York Chapter members\, with efforts spearheaded by Torrey and the Trail Conference\, set out to blaze the first trails in Harriman State Park. During all these years\, he published his Long Brown Path newspapers articlespromoting all the trails being built in Harriman State Park. \nThere will be a short presentation about Raymond Torrey after dinner on Saturday. SUMMARY:Hike Doodletown Circular
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 15\, 2021 – Doodletown Circular \nThe former hamlet of Doodletown (the name is said to derive from the Dutch Dood Tal\, for “dead valley\,” with the “town” suffix added later by English-speaking settlers) is part of Bear Mountain-Harriman State Park. \nDoodletown survived as a small\, isolated community for about 200 years. The area was settled in the 1760s by loggers and miners\, and at one time included a church\, a school\, several small businesses and two cemeteries in addition to 70 houses and 300 residents [at its peak in 1945]. The seven square mile hamlet was ultimately abandoned in the mid- 1960s after a long period of land acquisition by the Palisades Interstate Parks Commission. Our hike will start at the second Bear Mountain parking area (behind the administrative building and near the carousel). We will take the 1777 trail in\, go around the reservoir and see the June Cemetery (still active)\, and explore some of the old foundations. We will return by way of the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail that drops us off at the skating rink\, with a short walk back to the cars. Note: There is a $10 parking fee at Bear Mountain.
