SUMMARY:Saturday\, April 29\, 2023 - Centennial Hike: Camp Blue Bird
DESCRIPTION:5 – 6 miles\, with a steady\, moderately strenuous\, climb up and over Stockbridge Mountain. Elevation gain about 500 feet\nIn the Fall of 1924\, the New York Chapter subleased Camp Blue Bird (on the east side of Upper Twin Lake) from a group that used the property as a girl’s camp in Summer. In May\, the Chapter vacated Camp Blue Bird\, but was back in October and remained until April of 1925. It was at Camp Blue Bird that the members developed the model of the Saturday night communal meal. As stated by Ira Ayres in his write-up for the 50th anniversary of the Chapter: “Our very successful system of community meals began on our second weekend in October 1924. Hike will start at the Silvermine parking area. Meeting time is 9:30AM. Hike is qualifying (5-6 miles). SUMMARY:Annual Palm Sunday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Annual Palm Sunday Hike \nSt. John’s Church in the Wilderness \nSunday – April 2\, 2023 \n\nBarring any late snowstorm\, the good people of St. John’s Church in the Wilderness plan to host the traditional Palm Sunday hikers’ event on April 2nd this year.  A light lunch will be provided by the parishioners. (Note: The Barn itself is not usable due to needed repairs. If the weather is fair\, tables will be set up in the field near the Barn. If the weather is poor\, the lunch will take place inside using the Church’s meeting rooms.) The luncheon is scheduled for 2PM. There is no charge for the food and drink\, but donations are always welcomed. The annual Palm Sunday hike to St. John’s Church in the Wilderness has been a tradition since the 1930’s. Other groups from other hiking clubs are out this day headed to St. John’s\, and it is very common to cross paths with them as we hike along. \n\nThere will be two groups for the hike\, one led by Ray Kozma taking a ‘traditional’ route that will take us along Breakneck Pond and go through the AMC camp\, and one led by Lewis Ports who will take the trails on the ridge above Breakneck Pond. Both groups will start together from the gate at 7 Lakes Drive.  At a rest stop at Diamond Creek\, the groups will separate\, meeting up later at the church. \n\nSince this is a one-way hike\, please note: \n\nAll who are driving should meet at the Church by 9AM where the cars will be parked. All cars\, except for the one or two that will shuttle hikers/drivers back to our starting point\, will be left at the Church where the hike finishes. The hike will start from the Camp gate and Seven Lakes Drive about 10 AM. The address of the church is 119 Johnstown Road\, Stony Point\, NY between Lake Welch Parkway and Route 106.   \nPalm Sunday is in early April this year and early Spring weather can be unpredictable. Rain\, some cold\, blustery weather\, including snow and ice\, are always a possibility. Participants should dress warmly (layers\, no cotton)\, bring lunch\, snacks\, water\, raingear\, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Traction devices are recommended in case there is ice on the trail. \nAll participants must register with Ray Kozma (917-406-37820) or raymondkozma@gmail.com  or with Lewis Ports (646-339-1316) or ports.lewis@gmail.com by Thursday night\, March 30\, 2023.  Hike is Qualifying.

SUMMARY:Around Cape Horn Hike
DESCRIPTION:Around Cape Horn – Saturday – November 5\, 2022 \n\nElevation gains about 500 feet\, gentle to moderate uphills\, 5-6 miles. \n\nJoin in an easy hike to the Pine Swamp Mountain area (site of the Pine Swamp Mine) and Times Square. \n\nStarting at the parking area at Lake Kanawauke (former Route 106)\, we take a short road walk and then enter the forest\, following a woods road as it climbs to meet the Dunning Trail. \n\nWe will hike over to Pine Swamp (and can explore the area to find the mine entrance)\, take the A-SB to Times Square (so called because it is where the Arden-Surebridge (A-SB) trail\, the Long Path (LP)\, and the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail(R-D) all come together)\, then ‘round Cape Horn on the Long Path and back to the parking area.  We will look for a hidden cave behind Cape Horn. \n\nIt will probably be possible to arrange a ride from Sloatsburg for those without a car. Please call leader to check. Bring lunch\, rain gear\, water\, extra layers\, and appropriate hiking shoes. If there is snow/ice\, traction devices are recommended. Meet at the Parking area at 10AM. Qualifying. Please register by 9PM Thursday\, November 3\, 2022. \nLeader: Ray Kozma (Raymondkozma@gmail.com) or 917-406-3782.

SUMMARY:Hosted Weekend: Halloween with Ray Lustig
DESCRIPTION:When the chill returns to the air\, when the wizened leaves\, now taunting us in their new technicolored disguises\, rustle in the bristly grey winds like voices whispering from places unknown\, it’s time to venture back to the ghoul-haunted woodlands of Nawakwa to convene with those gone before us. \nYoung and old carving jack-o-lanterns will help us ward off evil spirits\, while the smells of spiced pies in the great ovens will entice friendly souls living and beyond. Warm autumnal cooking will soothe the troubled bellies of even the most forlorn wanderers of the darkening forests and crags. The mighty hearth will howl with its grimace of flames as we huddle round it to share hair-raising tales of encounters with the unexplainable. \nFor Saturday\, bring extra pumpkins if you wish (we’ll have several to share)\, costumes very much invited\, amulets\, incantations\, ouija board\, stories of your own. Spirit hour begins at 5:30pm\, and we join at the table at 6:30. The recitations will then begin. For those who survive the night\, there will be a hearty breakfast. We will then pack provisions for a treacherous four-mile (round—rip) journey out to the spot known to be haunted by the ghost of outlaw Claudius Smith. \nSnacks\, happy hour\, dinner\, breakfast\, trail lunch. Delicious\, wholesome\, healthy\, varied menu. Please let us know if you have any strict food restrictions. And please reserve by the Thursday night prior\, to avoid a curse that can afflict late reservers. \nNOTE that the official camp season will have ended\, and that means the running water will have been shut off\, so we’ll use well water\, pumped by the children. Bring hearty children. \nPlease reserve by email\, text\, or phone with:Ray Lustig (host) \nRaylustig@gmail.com \n917-903-9097
