SUMMARY:Mountain Laurel Hike
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 19\, 2021 – \nTime is TBD \nIf the timing is right\, this hike will take us thru tunnels of blooming Mountain Laurel. This is a moderately paced\, 5 to 7 mile hike (depending on our starting point). We will follow the Buck Trail until we come out at a fire road\, then turn onto an unmarked trail and finally approach Breakneck Pond where we will have lunch. We can take a look at the AMC Harriman Camp and return by a different trail or two. It will probably be possible to arrange a ride from Sloatsburg for those without a car. Please call leader to check. Bring lunch\, rain gear\, water\, extra clothing and appropriate hiking shoes. Limited to six hikers plus the leader/co-leader. Masks required. Starting point and time TBD. Qualifying. Please register with the leader by 9PM Thursday June 17th.\nLeader: Ray Kozma. Contact at: raymondkozma@gmail.com or 917-406-3782.

SUMMARY:Conservation Committee Project and Applicant Service Project Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Invasive Species Task Force Project \n\n \nCall for volunteers\n\n\nIn the fall we were able to destroy hundreds of invasive species plants along the road to Nawakwa in a single day. We will continue this project on Sat. June 12 in coordination with ACA and the NY/NJ Trail Conference. By killing invasive species\, which tend to take over entire areas\, we will be encouraging the growth of native flora which in turn helps provide an improved habitat for local animals and birds. We will meet the volunteers from the other organizations at our gate at 8:45and will work approximately until 1 PM. All necessary tools will be provided.\n\n This is also an opportunity for Applicants to complete a Qualifying Service Project\, however\, spots are limited based on the number of keyholders who respond. RSVP quickly and please\, if you can’t make it after signing up – let us know ASAP so another Applicant can attend.\n\nIt was a fun\, not very strenuous\, and very worthwhile activity. If you have some interest in joining us that morning or would like more information\, please contact me by June 5.\n\nIra Stahl\nConservation Committee Chairperson\n\nIrastahl@yahoo.com\nor text 516  547 2780

SUMMARY:Special Work Day and Orientation #2
DESCRIPTION:With so many chores and projects to complete\, and wishing to provide applicants with the opportunity for a required Service project\, the Board of Directors has added a Special Work Day May 29. We will work on the swim area and renovate the pathway down to the swim area. We will also be planting native plants to the inner camp area. We will need to assure an adequate ratio of applicants to keyholders\, so please register early! Please email Don Gabel at blaugabels@msn.com to attend. \nAn opportunity for a required Orientation is scheduled for this day\, as well. The Orientation is about 2.5 hours and will begin at 2:00 pm. SUMMARY:Hike Bald Rocks Shelter from Lake Kanawauke
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 22\, 2021 – Bald Rocks Shelter from Lake Kanawauke \nStarting from the parking area off the former Route 106 at Lake Kanawauke\, we take a short road walk and then enter the forest\, following a woods road as it gently climbs up to meet the Dunning Trail. The ascent up Black Rock Mountain is steady\, but not strenuous. After crossing a stream\, we come to the bare\, rocky area of Bald Rocks. At 1\,382 feet in elevation\, Bald Rocks is the highest point in the park. (The boulders that dot the bare rock gave rise to the name “Bowling Rocks.”) We traverse across the open rock surface (known as the Whaleback) and make our way to Bald Rock Shelter for a lunch break. The area around the shelter is interesting for the crossing of other trails nearby and for the many\, well-used camp sites scattered around the area. We retrace our steps back down to the parking area. It will probably be possible to arrange a ride from Sloatsburg for those without a car. Please call leader to check. Bring lunch\, rain gear\, water\, extra layers\, and appropriate hiking shoes. Limited to six hikers plus the leader/co-leader. Masks required. Meet at the Parking area at 9:45AM. Qualifying (5-6 miles). Please register by 9PM Thursday May 13th.\nLeader: Ray Kozma. Contact at: raymondkozma@gmail.com or 917-406-3782.

SUMMARY:Hike Doodletown Circular
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 15\, 2021 – Doodletown Circular \nThe former hamlet of Doodletown (the name is said to derive from the Dutch Dood Tal\, for “dead valley\,” with the “town” suffix added later by English-speaking settlers) is part of Bear Mountain-Harriman State Park. \nDoodletown survived as a small\, isolated community for about 200 years. The area was settled in the 1760s by loggers and miners\, and at one time included a church\, a school\, several small businesses and two cemeteries in addition to 70 houses and 300 residents [at its peak in 1945]. The seven square mile hamlet was ultimately abandoned in the mid- 1960s after a long period of land acquisition by the Palisades Interstate Parks Commission. Our hike will start at the second Bear Mountain parking area (behind the administrative building and near the carousel). We will take the 1777 trail in\, go around the reservoir and see the June Cemetery (still active)\, and explore some of the old foundations. We will return by way of the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail that drops us off at the skating rink\, with a short walk back to the cars. Note: There is a $10 parking fee at Bear Mountain. Limited to six hikers plus the leader/co-leader. Masks required. Meet at the Parking area at 9:45AM. Qualifying (5-6 miles). Please register by 9PM Thursday May 13th. Leader: Ray Kozma. SUMMARY:Qualifying Hike\, Sunday 10/18\, Black Rock Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Qualifying Hike\, Sunday 10/18\, Black Rock Mountain\n\nThis is a moderate loop hike up the Nurian trail to the Ramapo Dunderberg trail returning via the White Bar to the parking area on Kanawauke Road.  The hike starts with a gradual\, steady climb to the highest point of Harriman State Park at 1382 ft in elevation.  Continuing on the Black Rock Mountain ridge to an open rock surface known as Whaleback\, for multiple breath-taken views of the area mountains and valley.  Depending on this year’s Fall weather\, there may still be some brilliant colors of the Fall foliage. Much of the trail is on rocky\, large rock surfaces with occasional rock steps and climb.  These surfaces can be slippery when wet.  Consider your balance skill before signing up.\n\nMeet 9 am at the first parking lot off Kanawauke Road/Rt106 traveling East from Rt 17 N (it’s about 2-3 miles from Rt.17\, first parking lot on your right).  Dress in layers for the weather.  Bring lunch/snack\, 2+ liter of water. aximum 6 hikers.  RSVP by Wed 10/14/20.  Leader: Stephanie Lai\,sclai2007@yahoo.com.
