SUMMARY:Hike Diamond Mountain Circular
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 3: Diamond Mountain Circular \nStarting at 9 a.m. from the Nawakwa main cabin\, we will make our way along camp road toward 7 lakes drive which we will cross to access the Tuxedo Mt Ivy Trail. \nWe will only stay for a short distance on the TMI before we turn right onto the Stony Brook Trail and then left onto the orange Hillburn-Torne-Sebago Trail. \nAs soon as the ascent starts\, we will get a good workout. After 0.6 miles the trail merges with the Seven Hills Trail\, and we will be rewarded with a gorgeous view of our very own base — Lake Sebago. \nAfter another 0.2 miles we’ve reached the summit of Diamond Mountain (1240 ft). \nAt this point we will follow the blue Seven Hills Trail for about 0.7 miles with several great vistas along the way before descending and making a right onto the Kakiat Trail.  This is a rather steep descent that requires rock scrambling skills. \nAfter 0.6 miles on the Kakiat\, we will make a right onto the Stony Brook. After a relatively flat 1.4 miles we’ll be back at 7 lakes drive and return to camp. \nThis hike includes a steeper ascent and some rock scrambling\, and the pace will be a little faster than on some of the other hikes \nDistance: Approx. 5.6 miles (qualifying) \nApprox. total ascent 779 ft. \nParticipants need to wear sturdy footwear and bring snacks\, rain gear and enough water.  Hiking poles and bug spray are recommended.

DESCRIPTION:The Nawakwa Outdoor Association of New York will be holding a 2-day\, certifying wilderness first aid (WFA) class for keyholders and applicants. The fee for the class is $75\, to be paid directly to the instructor. Expect the Saturday class session to run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Sunday session from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \nThe weekend will be hosted primarily to accommodate WFA class participants\, but non-participants are welcome to come to camp\, too. Because the main water supply will be off\, meals will be hearty but simple to prepare and easy to clean up. DESCRIPTION:The hike begins at Reeves Meadow Visitor Center (where bathrooms may possibly be open). We’ll take the Pine Meadow trail (red) west to the start of the Seven Hills trail (blue)\, which climbs southward on smooth ground through open woods\, crosses a stream\, and then climbs again to an intersection. We will take the Hillburn-Torne-Sebago (orange) over rugged ground to Ramapo Torne\, taking a breather at each layer and eating lunch on top. From Ramapo Torne\, we’ll bear east to rejoin the Seven Hills\, enjoy the scenery from Torne View\, and reach the intersection with Reeves Brook trail (white). We’ll take a sharp left onto Reeves Brook and follow it back to the Pine Meadow trail and out to Reeves Meadow Visitor Center. \nBus riders\, please take the 9:10 a.m. Coach/Shortline bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal to Sloatsburg\, then walk to the parking area behind the firehouse to meet drivers. \nDrivers\, please meet by 10:10 a.m. in Sloatsburg in the parking area behind the firehouse to meet bus riders. \nEveryone\, please register with Bill Hladky\, wehladky@yahoo.com\, 914.874.4640\, by 3/27. DESCRIPTION:New Date – Sunday\, December 8\, 2024 – 9 AM\nShawangunk Ridge State Forest/Roosa Gap State Forest Hike\nDistance 6.85 miles\n1200 ft Ascent\nModerate Terrain and Pace. Qualifying \nThis hike in the Shawangunks is a well-kept secret by local rock climbers. We’ll start by ascending through the forest until we reach the ridge where we’ll find a large cave with climbing safety devices hanging from the rock face. We’ll then walk immediately below the ridge and underneath rock overhangs. We’ll then ascend to the ridge and walk atop a large slab with fantastic views North. We then descend a few hundred feet and climb back up into Gap State Forest. Upon reaching some viewpoints along the ridge we’ll return to the slab and descend via an alternate route. Sturdy footwear\, clothing layers and a couple liters of liquids are needed for this hike. DESCRIPTION:Distance: about 3-3.5 miles\nTime: about 2 hours \nNot qualifying \nWe’ll take a short ferry ride to a 172 acre island located a few hundred yards off lower Manhattan to walk Governors Island. The walk will take us through natural areas\, along former Coast Guard housing\, and up a very small (70’) hill to great views of the Lower Harbor. Good chances for bird spotting and public arts too. Maybe even a cruise ship sighting at the Brooklyn Terminal across Buttermilk Channel. \nGovernors Island was a military post and later a major command headquarters United States Army from 1794 until 1966. For the next 30 years\, it was home to Atlantic Area Command\, the U.S. Coast Guard’s largest and most complex installation in the world.  In 2003\, the island was sold and transferred to two parties: 22 acres\, designated as the Governors Island National Monument and administered by the National Park Service; and 150 acres is administered by The Trust for Governors Island. \nArriving at Soissons Landing ferry terminal on the island\, our walk passes Castle Williams (1811) on our way to Colonels Row. Then we’ll head to Hammock Grove and the Oval\, over to New York Harbor High School\, and then along the promenade facing Ellis Island and Liberty Island. A short walk up to Outlook Hil\, at 70’ the highest point on the island\, followed by a stroll through the Hills section and Picnic Point at the breezy end facing the lower bay. Next we walk along the Brooklyn facing side and over to the South Battery\, Parade Ground\, and Nolan Park where officer housing still stands. Fort Jay and a public art work ­The Field Sta­tion of the Melan­choly Marine Biol­o­gist are the last stops on our walk. \nWear walking shoes and warm layers. Heavy rain will cancel. Bring lunch if you’d like to stay on the island\, as there might be just a few vendors open at this time of the season. \nMeet @ 9:30 on 11/16 inside the Govenors Island Ferry Terminal at 10 South St Slip 7\, New York\, NY 10004. It’s near the heliport\, just a minute north of the South Ferry. 1\, 2\, 3\, 4\,  5\, N\, R and WW trains are nearby. DESCRIPTION:Parker Cabin Mountain via Claudius Rock – November 16\, 2024 – 9AM\nDistance: Approx. 6 miles\nApprox. total ascent 1015 feet\nQualifying \nStarting at the main cabin\, we will take the unmarked trail at Nawakwa towards the triangle trail. At the intersection with the triangle trail we will make a left towards Dutch Doctor. At Dutch Doctor we’ll make another right turn onto the Tuxedo Mount Ivy Trail. After 1.2 miles we’ll reach Claudius Den which offers great views and is a good stop to take a short break. From Claudius Den we’ll continue northbound on the White Cross Trail. After 2.15 miles we’ll reach the junction with the Ramapo Dunderberg Trail. We will make a right turn and continue for 0.25 miles to reach the summit of Parker Cabin Mountain. This is a good spot to have lunch and enjoy views of Lake Sebago. \nFollowing our lunch break we will descend Parker Cabin Mountain using the Triangle Trail\, pass Lake Skenonto and after 1.95 miles make a left turn at the unmarked trail that takes us back to camp. This hike features several ascents and descents\, and the pace will be a little faster than usual. Participants should wear sturdy footwear and bring sunscreen\, lunch\, snacks\, raingear\, and enough water. DESCRIPTION:November 9\, 2024\, 11 AM to approximately 1 PM\nDistance: 2.5-3 miles\n\nNot qualifying \nWe will visit two New York City parks in upper Manhattan: Inwood Hill Park and then Fort Tryon Park. Highlights of the walk include the Shorakkopoch monument (the rock where Peter Minuit allegedly bought Manhattan in 1626 for trinkets and beads worth 60 guilders)\, dramatic views of the Hudson River and New Jersey Palisades\, the Cloisters (although we won’t go in)\, and the Fort Tryon heather garden. \n\n\n\nBoth parks’ paths have potholes and are hilly\, and Fort Tryon Park can be quite windy\, so plan on wearing good walking shoes and bringing an extra warm layer. \nTo get to the start of the walk by subway: Take the 1 train to the 215th Street station in Manhattan. Walk North on Broadway to 218th Street and then West toward the Hudson River. Pass the Columbia University Stadium\, Baker Field\, on your right.\nWe will meet at the informal restaurant\, Inwood Farm\, 600 West 218th Street and Indian\nRoad\, at 11 am.\nFort Tryon Park ends at 187th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. City buses start there\nand end up quite far downtown. DESCRIPTION:Camp Nawakwa has a rich wood day history. In the last century\, wood day was established as a time when we as Nawakwans would fill our stores for the winter with freshly split firewood. Old wood would be rotated to the front of the pile while the fresh\, greener wood would be placed at the back to “season” for a season. \n\n\nOctober 26th\, 2024 Wood Day makes its return! 10:00 – till the wood is split! \nWe will be enjoying each other’s company\, moving wood rounds to the splitting area while splitting wood both manually and hydraulically and then stacking it under the porch. \nWe aim to start at 10:00 am\, there will be coffee in the pot and cider all day long.
