DESCRIPTION:The New York Chapter’s first camp in Harriman State Park was at Camp Quannacut (situated on Queensboro Lake) and used April and May of 1924). This hike will visit and have lunch at Queensboro Lake. The camp is no longer there\, but we will explore the area as we try to imagine what that first generation of members experienced having their first camp in the park. DESCRIPTION:TRAIL MAINTENANCE WORKDAY;  YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO ‘GIVE BACK’ IN APPRECIATION FOR THE TRAILS THAT HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO US\n\nMeet: 9:30 at Camp Nawakwa.  Approximately 4 mile hike on moderate terrain plus 2 hours of trail maintenance work. Learn about what a trail maintainer does and try your hand at basic trail work.  We will be cutting vegetation with hand tools (these will be provided\, but bring your own if you have decent hedge shears).  We will hike to the location\, work 1 hr\, take a lunch break\, work another hour\, then return to camp.  Requirements; bring plenty of liquid for hydration\, a packed lunch and snacks\, eye protection; prescription/ or safety glasses\, work gloves (camp can provide basic ones)\, sturdy hiking boots/shoes\, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt\, and sun and insect protection.\n\nCo-Leaders; Mary James and Ingrid Stauch\nNon-Qualifying. Serious rain will cancel.  Contact: Mary James maryelizjames@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:Sunday July 9 West Mountain Ridge Hike \nLength:​5 miles(Qualifying hike)​Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous \nTaking the Fawn trail\, up a steep climb to the ridge of West Mountain for a spectacular views of Bear Mountain and Perkins Memorial Tower.  Walking along the ridge to the West Mountain shelter.  We may make a detour to Cat’s Elbow.  The trail changes from open rock to a rocky footpath over undulating terrain as it passes several more viewpoints.  There are many glacial erratic rocks along the way.  Expect some woods roads\, many up & down hills\, and large rock slabs. \nHiking footwear required.  Bring food/snack\, water.  Rain cancel.  Taking the Palisades Interstate Parkway to Exit 17. SUMMARY:Sunday\, July 29\, 2023 - Raymond Torrey Memorial Hike (5-6 miles - Qualifying)
DESCRIPTION:Raymond H. Torrey was the first Chair of the New York Chapter and a leading figure in setting up the trail system we enjoy in Harriman. He was a co-author of the New York Walk Book\, first published in 1923. He was a newspaper journalist (the New York Post) and through his column\, called The Long Brown Path\, did much to promote and educate others about the wonders of the trails as they were being developed in Harriman State Park and beyond. This hike will visit and pay tribute to Raymond Torrey at the memorial placed on Long Mountain after his sudden death in 1938. This hike takes place on Sunday morning and details will be in the next Trail Marker and on our website. Leader will be Ray Kozma.
