Fall Hikes Weekend at Camp Nawakwa September 21-22, 2024
Join us for a full weekend of hiking!
Our Hike Leaders will be offering numerous hikes of various levels on both days. This is the perfect opportunity to get one or two hikes in on the same weekend, qualifying hikes for Applicants included. If you like hiking and are up for the challenge, this is a weekend not to be missed!
The Hike Leaders assembled for the weekend will be cooking for everyone at Camp on Saturday night. It will be simple camping fare; grilled burgers and veggie burgers, roasted sweet potato wedges, a big vegan salad and fruit pies for dessert. A hearty breakfast and trail lunch will be offered for the second day of hiking on Sunday.

1. Ramapo Thorne and Russian Bear Loop
Saturday, September 21, 2024 Qualifying: 5 Miles Elevation gain 1100’ Pace: Slow
Expect all grades of unimproved, natural eroded trails, with two short scrambles up the Torne. Hike is a stretched out loop using several trails. Valley walking under tall tree …Ridge walking with chestnut and bear oaks…two expansive views where the turkey vultures fly…lastly, the greatest free stranding pillar of the park, the Russian bear.
Bring water, energy food, sunscreen, and bug repellent as you need. . Check weather. If weather is iffy at 7am but is forecast to be ok by 9am, I will hike. If chance of showers, hike is on, but bring your rain gear. Be ready to walk at 9:00AM; meeting at Reeves Brook Visitor Center. (You may or may not get a car parking space in the two lots there. Road parking is on the south side, up and down from the center.) Interested Members and their guests please register. NJT from Hoboken arrives Suffern. 8:38. 2.Tour of the Nawakwa Neighborhood
Saturday, September 21, 2024 Distance: About 5 miles Pace: Moderate
Late September is the best time to enjoy the beautiful hills, valleys and lakes near Nawakwa.
Leave camp at about 10:00 a.m., and visit Lake Skenonto, Black Ash Swamp and other sights along the Yellow Triangle, Victory and Tuxedo-Mount Ivy trails.
Qualifying. Bring a trail lunch, snacks, water, rain gear and wear sturdy footwear. Hiking poles are recommended. Leader: Alex Wilkie.

3. Island Pond Circular
Saturday, September 21, 2024. Distance: 7 miles. Elevation gain: 900 feet. Pace: Moderate.
Using a variety of woods roads and trails, we’ll do a circular hike around Island Pond, with a stop at the famous “Lemon Squeezer” on the Appalachian Trail.
Bus riders should take the 9:10 a.m. Coach bus from PABT to Tuxedo Park and Ride (not the train station!).
Drivers meet at the Tuxedo Park and Ride at the intersection of Route 17 and 17A (about 2.5 miles north of the Tuxedo train station) at 10:15, when the Coach bus arrives. We’ll then shuttle to the parking area on Kanawauke Road where the White Bar trail crosses the road.

4. Tom Jones Shelter–Old Hemlock Hill Road
Sunday, September 22, 2024
Distance: About 7 miles Elevation gain: Approx. 500 feet Pace: Moderate
This hike will start at Camp Nawakwa, leaving about 9:30 AM. Following the shore path around Lake Sebago, we will pick up the Triangle Trail and take it over to Lake Skenonto. Following the Victory Trail around Lake Skenonto, we will make our way over to the Tom Jones shelter for our lunch stop. On our return trip, we will use some of the old Hemlock Hill Road that was used by the American Continental troops to go from the Ramapo Valley to Johnsontown and points east (it was replaced in 1824 by the Monroe-Haverstraw Turnpike, later renamed Route 106 [Harriman Trails, page 143]). We will follow a woods road back from Lake Skenonto, take a look at the Dutch Doctor Shelter [built in 1935], learn who the Dutch Doctor was, and return to camp.

5. Parker Cabin Mountain via Claudius Smith Den
Sunday, September 22, 2024
Distance: About 6 miles Elevation gain: 1015 feet Pace: Faster than usual
Starting at the main cabin at 9 a.m., we will take the unmarked trail at Nawakwa towards the triangle trail. At the intersection with the triangle trail we will make a left towards DutchDoctor. At Dutch Doctor we’ll make another right turn onto the Tuxedo Mount Ivy Trail. After 1.2 miles we’ll reach Claudius Smith Den which offers great views and is a good stop to take a short break. From Claudius Smith Den we’ll continue northbound on the White Cross Trail. After 2.15 miles we’ll reach the junction with the Ramapo Dunderberg Trail. We will make a right turn and continue for 0.25 miles to reach the summit of Parker Cabin Mountain. This is a good spot to have lunch and enjoy views of Lake Sebago.
Following our lunch break we will descend Parker Cabin Mountain using the Triangle Trail, pass Lake Skenonto and after 1.95 miles make a left turn at the intersection with the unmarked trail that takes us back to camp. This hike features several ascents and descents; the pace will be a little faster than usual.
