Sunday Outing to Roosevelt Island
February 9 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm
We meet at the entrance to the Roosevelt Island Tram then ride to the island ($2.90 Metrocard fare each way). Walk to the Smallpox Hospital and FDR Four Freedoms State Park at the bottom of the island, then up to the Octagon (site of the NYC Municipal Lunatic Society 1839-1959) with the Nelly Bly memorial, and the 1872 lighthouse at Hells Gate (by the architect who designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral) at the top. Back to the tram or the F train for your journey home. If anyone is up for it, we can each buy lunch at Granny Annie’s near the tram on the island. About 4 miles. Extreme cold and or heavy rain cancels.
