November Updates: (Updated: fireplace is fixed), Camp is Closed for the Season, and a Wood Day is Planned

November 9, 2021

These messages are from the Camp Committee and Chair, Don Gabel
Members, Keyholders, and Applicants – PLEASE NOTE:

Updated 11/30: Fireplace has been fixed

***** PLEASE DO NOT USE THE FIREPLACE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! *****

***** THERE ARE LOOSE STONES LEAKING SMOKE INTO THE LODGE  *****

The Park has been notified and we will follow-up to have the chimney fixed ASAP.

Camp Nawakwa is closed until 5-1-22. The water is turned off and the bathrooms are not functional. The portable potty is in place. Camp Nawakwa’s contract with the Park is from May 1 – October 15. Camp Nawakwa does not have access during the off-season for individual use. Individuals who access camp without a Permit will endanger themselves and put our contract with the Park at risk.

Access to camp during the off-season is, at the Park’s request, limited to planned events with a finite timeframe, such as Hosted Weekends, Invitationals, and Workdays for wood processing and maintenance. Only the Camp Chair, Don Gabel, can request a Permit from the Park for off-season access to camp. The turnaround time to get an off-season permit is protracted due to decreased Park office staff, and they are only working three days a week. Hosts are asked to give two weeks’ notice for Don to apply for a permit.  As always, check the calendar on adkny.org for events, including Wood Day in the near future.

We look forward, in 2022, to resuming a full season enjoying our brand-new lodge roof with new and refurbished, 🌞let-the-sunshine-in🌞, skylights!

Thank you to Dave Hayes, his father, and Jessica Scirbona for installing a new, very bright automatic light to the downstairs entrance to the lodge! Thank you, both for all the contributions you’ve made to camp in such a short time. Thank you, also, Dave, for agreeing to join the Camp Committee! Your skills will certainly come in “handy”, and we look forward to working with you!

– The Camp Committee

Caution! Recent Bear Activity near Lake Sebago

October 26, 2021

Emily reports some recent active bear activity on the trails near Lake Sebago. Bears have been more active throughout the Park recently. To be safe, we’re sharing some info about the location and info about staying safe near bears from the National Park Service.

While I was hiking alone this past Sunday around 4pm a bear stalked me down the trail & woods road for about 20 minutes until I ran into other hikers (luckily!). I was parked at Sebago boat launch. Btw I’m not planning to go out by myself after this.
The area was the “Y” part of the yellow Buck Mtn trail, both the yellow & yellow/black slash sections. Then onto the Pine Meadow woods road back down (north) to 7 lakes drive. I didnt see the bear after I took  the sharp left (west) turn on the road at the base of the long downhill, which is also where I met up with the hikers.
The bear was definitely following me before I noticed it on the yellow trail. The bear is probably habituated to people from Big Hill shelter & all the area campsites.
