Camp Orientation Course for all Applicants

March 15, 2021 Leave a Comment

The Board of Directors (BOD) has discussed ways to streamline the applicant process for our 37 applicants during the pandemic, while retaining the integrity of the applicant process. The BOD has decided to begin a trial for one year of an Orientation Program, effective now. The Orientation sessions, each approximately 3 hours in length, will take place at camp beginning the first day of camp April 17.

Applicants can sign up for Orientation by submitting the same online form, under the Nawakwa Keyholders tab at adkny.org that we are using to access camp. Please specify the Orientation date that you’ll attend.

You will receive an email confirmation.

Meanwhile, Sponsors will still be responsible to applicants for all other information specified in the Handbook, such as the History of Camp Nawakwa, the Hosting process, and perhaps most importantly, imparting the ideas of community and service. If you are a keyholder in good standing and would like to be a Sponsor, please email Teri Gabel.

Help Wanted

Finally, if you are a knowledgeable keyholder or would like to be part of a small group of knowledgeable keyholders, please contact Teri Gabel to schedule your most convenient date to conduct an Orientation. If you are a keyholder who would like to conduct an Orientation, but would like a camp refresher, please sign up to attend an Orientation.

Spring is stirring… and Camp Opening is coming soon!

March 14, 2021 3 Comments

We are a few short weeks away from our Camp Opening day. Looking at the calendar, our plan is to open camp for 2021 on the weekend of April 17-18. The Board is preparing several activities and events to kick off camp season including hikes, work weekends, and more.

We will need to follow last year’s Covid protocols in order to meet NY State requirements, including request forms to visit camp, pre-approval for overnight stays, and general requirements around camp use. The Camp Request form will be available next month. We’ll update visit protocols as NY State issues new guidelines.

Looking forward to seeing you at Nawakwa.

Sleeping Bags – good home found, thank you!

January 25, 2021 Leave a Comment

Update: 2/11/2021 a good home has been found. Thank you Rob!

——-

All,

Passing along this offer from Rob Rosenthal, a former ADK member. Rob reached out with a generous offer of two winter sleeping bags to our group. If you’re interested, please contact Marty McDonald using the Contact Us button on our website. I’ll pass Rob’s info to you.

I’m a lapsed ADK member and graduate of ADK’s winter school (1988). I have two EMS PolarGuard winter sleeping bags that I realize I will probably not be using in the future as my winter camping days are 10 years behind me. I would like to give them to an ADK member since I know they’ll be used and not end of in the waste stream. One is in good condition and has a compression sack. The other one, which is the same EMS model, is in fair shape only because it wasn’t stored properly and was left in its stuff sack, which slightly compressed its loft. The second one only has a conventional stuff sack. The bags are rated for -5 degrees, but I’ve used in in colder temperatures with a VB liner, which warms them to about -15 or -20. I’ll throw the VB liner into the offer too, but I only have one.

Anyone interested can contact me at my email. My only caveat is that they have to pick them up at my apartment building lobby on the Upper East Side. But, hey, it’s otherwise free.

Announcement: We are sad to announce there will be no Winter Social in early 2021

December 13, 2020 Leave a Comment

After investigating possible ways of having an online Winter Social,  the Board, at their December 10th meeting, decided the various alternatives presented did not provide an adequate opportunity for socializing and catching up with other Nawakwans.

The Board encourages everyone to organize get-togethers on Face Time, Zoom or other platforms  to socialize with Nawakwa friends throughout the winter.  For anyone who has not used Zoom, it is easy to use and a free subscription allows you to schedule unlimited 40 minute meetings.
