Volunteer Needed: Chair of the Activities Committee

December 4, 2021

Marty Kellerman is stepping down as the Chair of the Activities Committee at the end of this month. We are very thankful for his service in bringing live presentations and activities to Camp Nawakwa, as well as his efforts to deliver ‘virtual’ activities during our Covid pause.

We are looking for a volunteer to step forward and assist with this role. The responsibilities will involve coordinating interesting and timely events for our club, in the spirit of offering as much content as Marty has given the club. Marty will assist in the transition, as well as share his guidance with the next Chair.

Please reach out to the Board using the Contact Us page of the website.

The fireplace has been fixed and more news

November 30, 2021

The fireplace was fixed today and is now functional.

Yajing and Maryann have had two hosted events and are having a third this weekend, the second Tai Chi class.

If you or another keyholder would like to host, a day, a weekend, etc., please be reminded the new process for getting an approved permit will take about two weeks.

Finally, will need to have a Wood Day early next year to refill the wood pile.

Lewis sent this in and noted we had a few new applicants on this hike. There’s still some great weather outside before snow arrives, so why not join us on a hike?

November Updates: (Updated: fireplace is fixed), Camp is Closed for the Season, and a Wood Day is Planned

November 9, 2021

These messages are from the Camp Committee and Chair, Don Gabel
Members, Keyholders, and Applicants – PLEASE NOTE:

Updated 11/30: Fireplace has been fixed

***** PLEASE DO NOT USE THE FIREPLACE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! *****

***** THERE ARE LOOSE STONES LEAKING SMOKE INTO THE LODGE  *****

The Park has been notified and we will follow-up to have the chimney fixed ASAP.

Camp Nawakwa is closed until 5-1-22. The water is turned off and the bathrooms are not functional. The portable potty is in place. Camp Nawakwa’s contract with the Park is from May 1 – October 15. Camp Nawakwa does not have access during the off-season for individual use. Individuals who access camp without a Permit will endanger themselves and put our contract with the Park at risk.

Access to camp during the off-season is, at the Park’s request, limited to planned events with a finite timeframe, such as Hosted Weekends, Invitationals, and Workdays for wood processing and maintenance. Only the Camp Chair, Don Gabel, can request a Permit from the Park for off-season access to camp. The turnaround time to get an off-season permit is protracted due to decreased Park office staff, and they are only working three days a week. Hosts are asked to give two weeks’ notice for Don to apply for a permit.  As always, check the calendar on adkny.org for events, including Wood Day in the near future.

We look forward, in 2022, to resuming a full season enjoying our brand-new lodge roof with new and refurbished, 🌞let-the-sunshine-in🌞, skylights!

Thank you to Dave Hayes, his father, and Jessica Scirbona for installing a new, very bright automatic light to the downstairs entrance to the lodge! Thank you, both for all the contributions you’ve made to camp in such a short time. Thank you, also, Dave, for agreeing to join the Camp Committee! Your skills will certainly come in “handy”, and we look forward to working with you!

– The Camp Committee
