Photos from the Govenors Island Outing

November 16, 2024

Our intrepid group of 5 took a short ferry ride and meandered across the island. Wonderful views of the NYC skyline, the Statue of Liberty, a couple of forts, and a short climb up to a view of Brooklyn. We had a great time sharing stories about the island and every other topic. Looking forward to another outing soon.

Photos from the Harvest Dinner Hosted Weekend

November 16, 2024

Yajing writes…

Here are some pictures from the weekend of Nov 9-10. It was the coldest night of the season but we dared not to use the fireplace nor the stove for fear that sparks might fly out of the chimney. The night was cold but the company and the food were warm and comforting.

Saturday’s hike in Inwood-Hills  & Ft Tryon Parks

After this photo was taken inside Inwood Hills Park,  Larry Budner led the group: Susanne & Jerry Flower, Tricia Jorgen, Janet Sibarium & camera-shy photographer, Elisabeth Griggs, to Ft. Tryon Park.  The total distance was only about 2.75 miles. It was a beautiful chilly but sunny day. Larry Budner also gave an interesting history of the area during our outing.

Alert: Burn Ban and Low Water Levels at Camp

November 7, 2024

There’s a ban on outdoor fires in Harriman. First update from the Parks Commission, second from our Camp Chair Dave Hayes.

—

With the severe drought conditions we are experiencing, Rockland and Orange County both issued burn bans.

With that said all outdoor fires are prohibited at this time.

Thank you for your cooperation.

—

I would also strongly stress that on any hosted weekend that if the indoor fireplace is used that ashes should be placed in a metal bucket and fully doused in water before being placed outside or fires should be abstained from completely until we get some rain or the ban is lifted.
One additional note with the water table as low as it’s been you should expect water from the pump to be slightly cloudy or have an increased amount of sediment, it should only be used for washing and should be boiled first. You should plan to bring additional bottled water for cooking and drinking over what you would normally bring.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly! Dave

Thanks for all the support from our Nawakwa community, and to Ed for his wonderful donation of the wood splitter! We’re all set for a warm winter at Camp Nawakwa with a nice big batch of wood.

Hope to see you soon at an official off-season event at Camp.
